On Ethereum (and EVM-compatible chains), every transaction requires computational resources measured in gas units. A simple ETH transfer uses ~21,000 gas. A Uniswap swap uses ~150,000-300,000 gas. Complex DeFi interactions (multi-hop swaps, LP deposits, contract deployments) can consume 500,000+ gas.

Since EIP-1559, gas fees have two components: a base fee (burned, set by the network based on demand) and a priority fee / tip (paid to validators for faster inclusion). The total gas price in Gwei determines how much you pay.

Executing a Uniswap V3 swap using 184,000 gas at 25 Gwei base fee + 2 Gwei priority, with ETH at $3,500:

Gas Price: 25 + 2 = 27 Gwei
Fee in ETH: 184,000 × 27 × 10−9 = 0.004968 ETH
Fee in USD: 0.004968 × $3,500 = $17.39

Same swap at 100 Gwei (peak hours):
184,000 × 102 × 10−9 = 0.01877 ETH = $65.69

Tips for Using This in Trading

  • Trade during off-peak hours. Gas is cheapest between 2-6 AM UTC (US nighttime, Asia early morning). Weekend mornings are also low.
  • Use L2s for small trades. Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base charge 5-20x less than Ethereum mainnet. Bridge your assets once and trade cheaply.
  • Batch transactions when possible. Some protocols allow multi-call transactions that bundle several actions into one gas payment.
  • Set gas price alerts. Use Blocknative or custom Etherscan alerts to notify you when gas drops below your target (e.g., <15 Gwei).
  • Always simulate first. Use Tenderly or a similar tool to simulate your transaction before submitting. Failed transactions still consume gas.

Common Mistakes

  • Setting gas too low. Your transaction gets stuck in the mempool for hours. You then pay gas again to speed it up or cancel.
  • Not checking gas before complex DeFi operations. A yield farm deposit during peak gas can cost more in fees than a month of yield.
